1930

Precise style from early age

Born in Hausjärvi in 1928, Unto Tarkkanen was already known for his precise style as a young boy. Neat outfits, preferably a suit and a hat, which is part of men's outfits. His hair was kept straight with Brylcreem.

1940

Taiteilijaelämää Helsingissä

Unto Tarkkanen, now an adult, turns to a profession that does not yet have a representative in his family: goldsmith. He joins the Sundqvist brothers as a puppeteer and studies drawing and sculpture at the Ilta-Ateneum. Unto graduates as a miniature painter in 1949.

1950

Atelier Tarkkanen

A decade is a significant milestone in Unto Tarkkanen's life: a diploma in junior gold, a diploma as a master goldsmith, a diploma as a business technician. The decade is crowned by Tmi Tarkkanen, founded on 14.10.1955. Our atelier is born and at the same time we adopt the name UT.

1960

Own designs, inventions and love

The atelier is expanding as Unto Tarkkanen brings more and more of his own inventions to the market. Tarkkanen appears on television and is awarded prizes at fairs such as the Lahti Fair. A wide range of new ring designs and contemporary brooches will be on display. The decade is also a time of happiness: Unto and Raija marry and on 16 March 1967 a son, Mika, is born.

1970

Gem stones, Tabe Slioor and Kekkonen

The atelier opens its doors to an ever-increasing number of unique custom-made pieces for customers. One of the most famous femme fatales of her time, Tabe Slioor, also known as the courtesan, is one of Tarkkanen's regular customers. Urho Kekkonen is also rumored to have been a regular client.

The decade is colored by a variety of designs in jewelry. At the same time, one of the most enthusiastic workers in the studio is Mika, who makes his first piece of jewelry, a ring.

Chains and spectrolites

The 80's is an era of showy jewelry. Massive chains in particular can be seen in the 80's. Yellow gold is the colour of the day and it is combined with either diamonds or spectrolite.

1990

Sukupolvenvaihdos

Mika Tarkkanen takes over the atelier and moves it to the current workshop premises on the street level.

The range expands and diamond jewelry becomes an increasingly important part of the production. At the same time, the atelier will produce a collection of jewelry designed for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the spirit of blue and white Finland.

2000

Tunteiden vuori sekoitta Suomen sormusmarkkinat

The decade of turmoil begins on a sad note with the death of Unto Tarkkanen in 2000. However, he was able to see the success of the atelier in Mika's hands. The following year, Mika graduates as a master jeweller with his stunning three-ring work.

Then comes 2009: the Mountain of Desire ring, designed by Mika, wins the Most Beautiful Ring of the Year competition by a landslide. A classic is born!

Kisällejä, mestareita ja menestystä

Tarkkanen's winning spree continues: the 2010 Prague diamond ring is awarded as the most beautiful of the year and the Monument collection is chosen as the official jewelry of the year of Finland's 100 independence celebrations. Mika is chosen as Goldsmith of the Year, the atelier's goldsmith Ville Tuovinen graduates as Master, Robert Tarkkanen starts his training at the atelier.

2020

Diamonds and the third generation

The beginning of the decade is a time of boldness and creative madness. The whole world closes as the pandemic hits all of us. Aterlier Tarkkanen operates in closed doors and focuses on developing the business. At the same time, Mika's long-standing dream of creating her own watch collection comes true.

2023 culminates in a celebration. In the spring, Mika will be awarded Master of the Year, and in the autumn Robert will graduate as Master Goldsmith. The result is the magnificent Roots - Roots masterpiece series.

In the same year, three rings designed by Tarkkase are selected as finalists for the Most Beautiful Ring of the Year. Robert Tarkkanen's Roots - Roots masterpiece ring wins and Robert becomes the youngest winner in history.
